About Kalamkari

“Kalam” is pen, “kari” is work. In Srikalahasti the outlines are drawn by hand with a bamboo pen and filled with natural dyes; in Machilipatnam the same motifs – vines, paisleys, birds, temple borders – are printed with wooden blocks. Colours are madder red, iron black, indigo and mustard on cotton that has been treated with myrobalan, which is why the base is cream rather than white and why the print softens after the first wash. Wash cold, inside out, separately the first time; dry in shade.

Wearing Kalamkari

Kalamkari is a dense print – pair it with solids: a Three-Print kurta with plain white pants or beige or black palazzos, a Kalamkari skirt with a plain cotton blouse, a Kalamkari cape over a plain slip. Both are used – the product page says which. Block Kalamkari repeats a motif; pen Kalamkari has freehand outlines with small variations.

Why does the print fade slightly after washing?

Natural dyes on myrobalan-treated cotton release a little colour the first time; after that the print is stable. Wash cold and separately once.
